Igor Stravinski (1882 - 1971) was a Russian composer who's musical ideas had a revolutionary impact on the music of the 20th century. One of his most famous pieces is the Ballet, The Rite of Spring. The first audiences for this ballet were shocked to hear the driving rhythms and the tonal dissonances.
The heavy pulse in The Rite of Spring is emphasized by orchestral "hits" and loud brass and wind accents. Our ears are forced to hearing the rhythms by Stravinski's short melody clips and frequently accented notes.
