Why listen to live music?
Our educational objectives for music in the schools include learning to
CREATE, PERFORM, RESPOND and CONNECT
CREATE, PERFORM, RESPOND and CONNECT
1. Our physical response to live music is powerful. The multitude of tones and timbres and the intensity of sound reverberates through our whole being.
2. Music doesn't come from a machine, it comes from people. Students can see, hear and understand that music is the product of the creative minds and focused skill of highly talented people.
3. Students can see how the instruments work and how the sounds are made.
4. Live music is imperfect. Kids hear the multi-take polished music on recordings and can interpret this to be how all music should sound.
The live music of professionals is extraordinary, but never without the fallibility of human performance. When kids perform their own music, they must learn to accept that they will make mistakes, they will never perform with the accuracy of an emotionless machine. This is all part of the art.
5. Watching live musicians perform allows student performers to examine the techniques of accomplished performers.
6. Shared musical experiences with friends and family create a sense of community.
7. The music is specially created for them. It only exists in the moment , must be loved and let go.
8. Attending live concerts encourages kids to support musicians. We teach the kids to encourage and patronize the arts they love.
